W3C Standards
The World Wide Web Consortium has put together specifications and rules to help guide developers on how to properly code an internet project.
With all of the different browsers, website technologies, and advancements in these systems makes it very difficult for browsers and other applications to interpret the code properly. To cure this problem there is an attempt at standardization.
It is a good idea to comply with W3C standards to be compatible with future browsers and technologies. There are also validation tools in order to make sure markup follows these rules and complies with future standards.
